Why We Sabotage our Spiritual Enlightenment:

The Fear of Becoming Intuitive

The role of intuition within our spiritual lives is well worth chatting about, but this month I’d like to zero in on intuitive development as the precursor to the experience of revelation. By revelation here I mean the revealing to us of clear Divine instruction. The intuitive life is essentially a growing attunement to the psyche of ordinary life, one that demands an increasing practice of honesty to oneself and others. For that reason, it can be extremely intimidating, because by its very nature, intuition causes change to occur in one's life. The dramatic nature and span of these changes, such as honesty about emotions and other perceptions, can be so overwhelming as to cause us NOT to want to experience revelation. Intuition threatens to swamp us with too much change, which will be too spiritually demanding. Therefore, people block their intuitive process as a way of blocking the greater goal of revelation, which represents surrender to the will of the Divine.

But it’s important to point out up front that intuition is not the same as revelation. Intuition can bring us lots of useful information that might not otherwise be available to us, and as such it is a valuable survival tool. But we shouldn’t make the mistake of presuming that the development of intuition is on a par with high levels of spiritual realization. That distinction is be as far-fetched as it may at first appear. For some reason within our spiritual culture today, being intuitive is associated with being spiritually conscious. Not only is that absolute nonsense, but it is also classic Western near-yuppie hype. Being intuitive is part of our natural design and hardly a condition brought on by advanced spiritual attainment. We are born bursting with the kind of intuition that fosters our survival. Babies have it; animals are highly intuitive; and if you've ever met a good gambler or shrewd businessperson, you know they are flying high on intuitive abilities. And believe me, I've yet to meet a gambler

who is "OM-ing" in the back room while dining on a vegan lunch special (not that it couldn’t happen). Gut-level intuitive abilities run through our psyche and spirit just like blood through our veins.

WHEN INTUITION BECOMES REVELATION

Revelation is the experience of perceiving a truth that is transcendent of a personal anchor or agenda. The content, if we may even use that word in reference to the subject of revelation, can be about the Self, the nature of life, or the Divine. The substance that is revealed is greater than the channel or the source. Intuition, on the other hand, is the name we have given to gut feelings, to refined hunches, and to reading the energy fields of other individuals, and is not to be confused with receiving revelations that often enter the psyche without warning.

ON THE GROUND LEVEL

Let’s shift gears for a moment and bring this topic down to ground level. The thing about developing intuitive skills or learning to read symbols or listening with a cosmic ear to the phone is that, aside from what you may or may not want to discover about yourself, you have to figure out what to do with all the perceptions you amass from your ordinary world. When my life was fully consumed with medical intuition, I was frequently asked whether I did “readings” on everyone I encountered, say, in a restaurant or on a plane. That’s utter nonsense. Of course I didn’t. First of all, as I was quick to point out, I have no interest whatsoever in reading people who haven’t invited me to do so. Truth be told, I did often sense the energy fields around people, although not in an overwhelming way. But as many of you know, once you are wired in a certain way you become accustomed to functioning as a multi-sensory individual. And so, your normal perceptual skills draw into your field more data than someone operating from

five senses. Still, what do you do when you can access data you do not want in your field? What if you “knew” someone was ill? Would you tell the person? Would you really? I have rarely acted on that type of data. My position has been that if the heavens wanted me to say something, it was up to heaven to create a circumstance in which I would be invited into the picture, as opposed to breaking in. Often that happened, but if not, I kept quiet and allowed the plans that were in motion long before I entered the picture to continue to unfold. It’s never easy to live with multi-sensory information.

SO – DO YOU EVER SABOTAGE YOURSELF?

Given this divide between emotional intuition and Divine revelation, where do you fall? Let’s say that you exist somewhere in between occasional acts of grace in which some truth is revealed to you – something transcendent of the Self, one of those rich “aha’s” that come out of no where – and a functioning survival intuition. And let’s say that you would like precise intuitive guidance when it comes to making earthly decisions, financial decisions, relationship decisions, occupational decisions.

MOVING THROUGH

Let me make a suggestion, and I’m hoping you will really act on this one. For two days you are going to observe yourself with only one intention in mind: Observe how many times you act contrary to your intuitive directives. You may end up with a list of statements such as, “I knew I shouldn’t have…etc.”, and that’s fine. But the goal here is to catch yourself in the act of sabotage at least once and, I hope, more than once. Just catch yourself betraying your own intuition, acting contrary to the data that you know is authentic. The next stop, of course, is to investigate why you sabotage yourself, but let’s start out with catching yourself in the act. All it takes is for your consciousness to acknowledge one moment of sabotage and your psychic life will never be the same. Start there.

Okay then. Part Six on this seven-part series will be next. Whewie, it feels good to be back in the saddle again. Thank you once more for your kindness and support during this past month. I am feeling fabulous again – better than I have for a long, long time. Now if only the CUBS would get to the World Series. . . .

My love to all of you,

Caroline

Description:

Intuitive abilities are your first and most primal natural resource. In so many instances, the struggles and confusion people have within their lives are due to their efforts to repress their intuitive abilities, believing that they lack the "gift" of being intuitive. But intuitive sight is the most natural sense you have, and developing a rapport with this inner resource is the one experience that transforms the manner in which you will embrace the rest of your life. Many techniques have been developed to assist people in awakening their intuitive skills, but working effectively with any skill depends upon the quality of a person's self-esteem along with their ability to engage with life as an empowered, elegant spirit. In this retreat, becoming an "elegant spirit" and developing your interior voice is the focus, an experience that will hopefully be delightfully enchanting.

Holding this retreat at Miraval is very much a part of creating the enchantment of this workshop because it is such a rare gift to be able to pamper your body, relax your mind, and explore your spirit all in one. Last year's workshop was absolutely delightful, and certainly a major reason for this was that due to the intimate size and setting of Miraval, we "took it over" and had the entire spa to ourselves...which made the environment we shared even more incredible.

Finally, let me add that January is a perfect time for this retreat because there is something so nice about beginning the New Year with an experience that makes you feel good about who you are and the gift you bring to this world.

The workshop will be organized as follows:

exploring the nature of intuitive abilities
investigating the fear of becoming intuitive
how intuitive skills redirect your future
identifying your Sacred Contracts and archetypes
a bit about the mystical life....

Intuitive Power; Your Natural Resource
Intuitive Power: Your Natural Resource

January 10, Rosemont IL.
9:00am to 5:00pm

We are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so powerful that it can tell us how to heal and prevent illness. Our intuitive intelligence is also the source of life guidance, providing us with energetic instructions that are meant to guide our life choices. Join Caroline Myss and Dr. Judith Orloff, two renowned intuitive practitioners and teachers, for a special day to show you how to tap into your intuition for health, healing, and life guidance. We all have intuitive gifts. The magic comes in realizing how to trust the natural guidance of those gifts. In this intensive workshop you will learn how to tune into the wisdom of your bodies, sense subtle energies and chakras, listen to dreams, and make decisions based on your deepest sense of inner authority and power. As part of this workshop, Dr. Orloff will share her journey from being an intuitive child--alone with abilities she didn't understand--to becoming a respected psychiatrist who uses intuition as an indispensable tool in her practice and life. In addition, she will

highlight how intuition can help you combat energy vampires who are draining your psychic energy;
teach you how to prevent energetic overload and exhaustion from being in crowds;
show you ways to avoid taking on other people's negativity and pain.
Caroline will discuss the mystical nature of intuition and offer instruction on how to develop your own intuitive skills. Her presentation will be highlighted by discussions on intuiting your Sacred Contracts.

Archetypes are energetic companions that coordinate the experiences and opportunities you agreed to prior to your birth and serve the integration of your spirit. As is taught in most spiritual traditions, the integration of the elements of your spirit, elements that include your unfinished business or unrealized fears or untapped inner resources, is the goal of the spiritual path.
Your psychological and emotional patterns are clues to your archetypal patterns and to their mythic nature, continuously manifesting in subtle ways in your life. Women do live the fairy tale of the princess in search of their knight and men do search for the hero's journey. It is amazing to discover is how much of your life has been created around and through archetypal desires. And further, when they are not fulfilled as the "fairy tale" promises, challenging the "inner fairy tale" is an exquisitely healing experience.
Your individual spiritual life is carved around these subtle and extremely present cosmic companions. Coming to know these interior forces brings into focus the many sacred contracts of your life, offering you profound insight and direction in terms of making life choices based upon the needs of your spirit and not the demands of your personality.
Caroline and Judith will conclude the workshop with a dynamic dialogue, inviting questions and feedback from participants. It's an opportunity to ask questions only these two people can answer and to expand your thinking about intuition and energy to new dimensions. This exceptional day will leave everyone feeling refreshed, enlightened. and empowered, ready for anything life has to bring.
