WHY WE SABOTAGE OUR SPIRITUAL ENLIGHTENMENT
PART SIX: THE FEAR OF BECOMING A HEALER

This Salon will be aimed at stirring questions far more than providing answers. It’s a think piece, one to stretch the interior, and, I hope, one that is timely as well.

The archetype of the Healer holds a front-row position in today’s spiritual culture. It has emerged as a force to reckon with amid our New Age world that is characterized by healing. It may be that healing and healers form the core of this age of transformation – certainly the subject is crucial to the publishing world. So central is the Healer archetype in our lives now that we must pursue a much larger interpretation of this pattern, beyond its application as the source of countless New Age occupations and predilections, which is where we find it in action most abundantly.

My world is filled with healers, as are my audiences. And just as numerous are the numbers of people drawn to the healing arena for personal reasons. Let’s face it, personal healing is the new narcissism. A most intriguing assortment of life currents have merged in our culture and given rise to a hybrid spirituality that never before existed. And somewhere deep in the mixture of this psycho-spiritual alchemy exists an organic point of psychic perception that holds the potential to launch one into a cosmic realm that one would not consciously choose. I am speaking of awakening a certain sensitivity, a perceptual life that, once unleashed, cannot be repressed. I believe that deep in our soul we know that the potential for a transformation “not of our own choosing” exists. This potential is so profound that it calls to us without our knowing the source. Yet we sense it well enough to fear it, even though we cannot name it. I am referring to unlocking a point of psychic ascension in which we become hyperaware that we no longer have a choice about how we must serve for the rest of our lives. But I’m getting way ahead of myself.

WHAT EXACTLY IS A HEALER?

What makes someone a healer? When do people get to the point at which they declare to the world at large that they are able to help others? What are the earmarks? How do you know you are a “healer” and not just kidding yourself? Wounds and more wounds frequently serve as “proof” that someone belongs in the healer’s corps. (I have to admit that as a Catholic, I learned that wounds and suffering are the way to go. Can’t get anywhere without some Divine misery. And yet, can you imagine someone like, oh, the great mystic John of the Cross stating that his claim to fame as a mystic-healer was a bad childhood? Is that not an absurd image? I can just see the Foreword to his treasure, The Dark Night of the Soul, acknowledging as the reasons for his spiritual awakening not only his rejecting grade school teachers, who told him he was destined to be a failure, but also his emotional needs’ not being met at home by his working parents. Stranger things have happened, but somehow I still can’t imagine this scenario.)

Past the wounds, past the social loneliness that often leads people into the healing arts is the reality that healers are formed out of the clay of the human experience in its many manifestations. Included among the sculpting influences of the Healer archetype are our psychic life, our intellectual life – academic or not -- our sexual life, our delights in life, and our talents, all of them mixed in together. From this alchemy comes a natural attunement to others that is the result of a growing expression and attunement to ourselves. To describe this in more seductive imagery, we have expanded our psychic wiring to include an ever-widening exposure to the physical world, combined with a liberal exposure to the mystical life. Out of that combo comes the encounter with ourselves via archetypal heights in which we can comprehend ourselves as composed of psychic fragments that need integration. We can discuss ourselves as sources of conscious energy that engage in intuitive communication with the whole of creation, at least with each other. We apply conscious effort to becoming conscious, intuitive, and alive on the interior plane, recognizing the interior life as the matrix center between the chronos and the kairos fields of life.

PERSONAL PONDERINGS

So here are some questions for you to ponder along the lines of healing and healers. Have we become overly attuned to ourselves? Are we overly self-focused? Can we go too far into our own interiors, to the point where all we see is ourselves? Is that truly healing or is that narcissism?

I have heard people say, “I can’t live without a weekly massage.” Oh, come on. ”I want a weekly massage” is more on target, so why all the drama? Why make it sound as if the whole of your psychic life will come tumbling down if you don’t get recharged, or whatever you want to call it, on a massage table? Why can’t more people simply say, “I love massage, period”?

Now then, next Salon will conclude this series on “Why We Sabotage Our Enlightenment.” Topic: The End of Ordinary Life

Oh, if you find a deeper interest in this approach to the Healer – if you relate to this in a way that draws you to want more of a personal examination -- I am doing a workshop on this subject, directed specifically to people in the healing arts, this January at Miraval Health Spa. (Check out my Web site for more information.) I believe that working with healers through examining these questions, and so many more that have not been addressed before, is a critically essential pursuit. I created this retreat – and the Miraval workshop is more of a retreat-workshop mixture – because the need is real.

And here’s a PS. I am always so interested in your responses to these Salons. I read them all, although it is impossible for me to respond to all, and I apologize for that. I wish I did have the time to address your questions, because they are all so rich. Still, your letters inspire what I will write next, and I thank you so much for that.

Let me add one more love note. A while back I requested stories from those of you who have experienced acts of service from others that have transformed their lives in small or significant ways. I was overwhelmed by your response, having received nearly 1,200 letters. You have provided me with a warehouse of human gold that will be turned into a source of inspiration for many, believe me. I was never so moved by so many. My deepest thanks and love to all of you.

Description:

Intuitive abilities are your first and most primal natural resource. In so many instances, the struggles and confusion people have within their lives are due to their efforts to repress their intuitive abilities, believing that they lack the "gift" of being intuitive. But intuitive sight is the most natural sense you have, and developing a rapport with this inner resource is the one experience that transforms the manner in which you will embrace the rest of your life. Many techniques have been developed to assist people in awakening their intuitive skills, but working effectively with any skill depends upon the quality of a person's self-esteem along with their ability to engage with life as an empowered, elegant spirit. In this retreat, becoming an "elegant spirit" and developing your interior voice is the focus, an experience that will hopefully be delightfully enchanting.

Holding this retreat at Miraval is very much a part of creating the enchantment of this workshop because it is such a rare gift to be able to pamper your body, relax your mind, and explore your spirit all in one. Last year's workshop was absolutely delightful, and certainly a major reason for this was that due to the intimate size and setting of Miraval, we "took it over" and had the entire spa to ourselves...which made the environment we shared even more incredible.

Finally, let me add that January is a perfect time for this retreat because there is something so nice about beginning the New Year with an experience that makes you feel good about who you are and the gift you bring to this world.

The workshop will be organized as follows:

exploring the nature of intuitive abilities
investigating the fear of becoming intuitive
how intuitive skills redirect your future
identifying your Sacred Contracts and archetypes
a bit about the mystical life....

Intuitive Power; Your Natural Resource

Caroline Myss

January 10, Rosemont IL.
9:00am to 5:00pm

We are keepers of an innate intuitive intelligence so powerful that it can tell us how to heal and prevent illness. Our intuitive intelligence is also the source of life guidance, providing us with energetic instructions that are meant to guide our life choices. Join Caroline Myss and Dr. Judith Orloff, two renowned intuitive practitioners and teachers, for a special day to show you how to tap into your intuition for health, healing, and life guidance. We all have intuitive gifts. The magic comes in realizing how to trust the natural guidance of those gifts. In this intensive workshop you will learn how to tune into the wisdom of your bodies, sense subtle energies and chakras, listen to dreams, and make decisions based on your deepest sense of inner authority and power. As part of this workshop, Dr. Orloff will share her journey from being an intuitive child--alone with abilities she didn't understand--to becoming a respected psychiatrist who uses intuition as an indispensable tool in her practice and life. In addition, she will

highlight how intuition can help you combat energy vampires who are draining your psychic energy;
teach you how to prevent energetic overload and exhaustion from being in crowds;
show you ways to avoid taking on other people's negativity and pain.
Caroline will discuss the mystical nature of intuition and offer instruction on how to develop your own intuitive skills. Her presentation will be highlighted by discussions on intuiting your Sacred Contracts.

Archetypes are energetic companions that coordinate the experiences and opportunities you agreed to prior to your birth and serve the integration of your spirit. As is taught in most spiritual traditions, the integration of the elements of your spirit, elements that include your unfinished business or unrealized fears or untapped inner resources, is the goal of the spiritual path.
Your psychological and emotional patterns are clues to your archetypal patterns and to their mythic nature, continuously manifesting in subtle ways in your life. Women do live the fairy tale of the princess in search of their knight and men do search for the hero's journey. It is amazing to discover is how much of your life has been created around and through archetypal desires. And further, when they are not fulfilled as the "fairy tale" promises, challenging the "inner fairy tale" is an exquisitely healing experience.
Your individual spiritual life is carved around these subtle and extremely present cosmic companions. Coming to know these interior forces brings into focus the many sacred contracts of your life, offering you profound insight and direction in terms of making life choices based upon the needs of your spirit and not the demands of your personality.
Caroline and Judith will conclude the workshop with a dynamic dialogue, inviting questions and feedback from participants. It's an opportunity to ask questions only these two people can answer and to expand your thinking about intuition and energy to new dimensions. This exceptional day will leave everyone feeling refreshed, enlightened. and empowered, ready for anything life has to bring.
