Here are a few paragraphs from the Caroline Myss JULY SALON:
HOW DOES HEAVEN ANSWER OUR PRAYERS?
I read a plaque the other evening that reminded me of one of those richly thought-provoking conversations that took place around the dinner table a long time ago: “Whether called or uncalled, the Divine is present.” The setting for the evening was perfect: The house was old and cozy, the fireplace was real and radiating heat, the rooms were perfectly illuminated with just the right amount of candlelight, the music was soft and classical, the meal was a masterpiece, and the “weather outside was frightful,” which made the warmth of the home feel all the more like an on-going embrace. Sometimes the alchemy of a particular group of people with just the right setting creates an atmosphere in which the conversation becomes electric with inspiration. That night the subject turned to the power of prayer. The opening comment was, “Sometimes I wonder if prayers are really answered. I mean, how do you know when a prayer is heard or when a prayer is answered? Is there a time when you are supposed to stop praying for something and just give up?”
Those questions drew others into the center of conversation; “Are some prayers more effective than others? Do candles and incense help with prayer delivery and do prayers said on holy days have more influence or are all these considerations just our way of creating rituals of intimacy with the Divine?” Catholics, of course, have a long tradition of miracles, saints, healings, apparitions, and divine interventions that form the core of their religious tradition. I love that part of the Catholic world. (Get this – while on my book tour for Sacred Contracts, I stayed at a health spa in California. So, I wandered into the spa to check it out and noticed a sign on the counter that read, “Channeled session with Michael the Archangel $175.” The price was slashed to $135. I looked at the girl at the counter and said, “So, let me get this clear. For $175-slash-$135, Michael the Archangel will show up and talk to me -- just like that.”
She, with a little West Coast attitude, said, “That’s correct.” I said, “Well, like, what does Michael the Archangel DO with all the money he makes from these readings? Does he work on commission?” That last question caused us to lock into one of those intense stares that I’m so good at. I finally said, “Do you have any idea how absurd this is? Do you honestly think that you can command an archangel – or any angel for that matter – to just show up because someone writes a check for $135? I mean, according to this sign, you even have the nerve to discount a session with Michael the Archangel.”)
Who is so easily seduced that they would fall for such nonsense? For all the many nations that I’ve taught in, and that’s quite a few, I cannot think of one in which someone or some organization would have the nerve to claim they could command an archangel to show up for cash on the counter. And what’s worse, perhaps, is that people are foolish enough – or desperate enough – to fall for these street pranks. Yet, this is a measure of how desperately we want our prayers heard and answered. When it comes to finding a way to get to heaven and to having heaven reach us, we are exceedingly vulnerable.
But anyway, back to Catholicism and the topic of whether prayers are heard, and how we know when we’ve received the answer. Among my favorite apparition reports are the many stories of the Madonna. I have more than a fondness for the Madonna; I have a devotion to her. This comes not only from my background as a Catholic, but also because I was educated by nuns who are dedicated to the Madonna in so many ways. For one thing, miracles are not uncommon around convents. And angels are present everywhere (for free, I might add – humph to that ridiculous health spa). Aside from my sentimental devotion, however, the Madonna intrigues me because she tends to have a pattern to her apparitions. She often appears to children (frequently uneducated) as opposed to highly sophisticated adults. The reason for this, I have always assumed, is that the lack of conventional education insures a higher state of intellectual innocence.
Now then, here are the points appropriate to this Salon -- and please read this “trans-Catholic,” that is, from an archetypal perspective. For regardless of whether an apparition comes from the Catholic, Jewish, or Hindu tradition, there is a pattern to the nature of divine interventions and guidance, and THAT is the topic that I am highlighting in this Salon. I am using my Catholic heritage as a means to that end. In her apparitions, the Madonna frequently offers cryptic guidance coupled with absurd instructions to the visionaries. (Think of yourself as a visionary, which is the archetype you tap into when you are in a state of prayer seeking guidance or a vision. You ARE invoking a vision or guidance in prayer.) For example, at Lourdes, in response to the crowds demanding proof that these apparitions were really taking place, the Madonna instructed Bernadette, the young shepherd girl, to dig a hole in the ground with her hands and eat the grass like an animal. Bernadette’s behavior made no sense to those lo
oking at her, all of whom wanted to see something more divinely practical that they could use in some way to increase their earthly comfort level. According to reports, Bernadette was laughed at – mocked, if you will – and eventually the disappointed crowd dispersed. Later, when no one was around, a spring of water began to trickle out of the ground. In the village was a young mother who believed in Bernadette’s visions, and upon learning about the spring she took her dying infant son to the grotto and immersed him in the icy waters from the earth. He was healed and this became the first miracle of Lourdes.
