As many of you know, I tend to interpret events from an archetypal perspective as a way of getting a symbolic perspective. This position is like getting off the stage where events are happening and rushing up into the balcony in order to observe everything from a distance. Distance is always an advantage – always. You never feel “separation anxiety” when you withdraw yourself from the center of chaos or madness or confusion in order to center yourself. In fact, it’s the only position through which you can regain – and retain – your center of balance.
So with all this in your mind, let me turn your attention to certain events happening around us presently; specifically, the Pope’s Encyclical on Climate Change. A Black Swan was the name Nassin Nicholas Taleb gave to game-changing events that happen out of the clear blue that redirect the movement of society in some way. The terrorist events of 911 reshaped the world – just like that. No one saw them coming but the consequences reshaped the future of humanity.
Like all Black Swan events, this Papal encyclical holds enough fuel to magnetize human beings to redirect what and how they think about the social, political and moral consequences of ignoring or denying the crisis of environmental issues. He abhors seeing helpless people victimized or used by those who feel entitled to taking advantage of people who have no choice but to surrender to inhumane terms to survive. For Francis, this is a form of economic slavery. Pope Francis includes the Earth itself as a living Being that requires representation. The fact that he is one of the few human beings who has a global platform precisely because of his position as Pope makes the content of the messages he is delivering to humanity at this time all the more significant. The laws or financial policies that are silencing so many citizens and politicians of so many countries, including our own, do not silence him.
