I have heard so many people say “I’m going through a dark night.” What I realized a long time ago is that most people who use that phrase did not know where it came from. They didn’t realize they were referring to a mystical experience that was first identified by a Carmelite priest back in the 1500s in Spain. And I thought – have you any idea what you just said? And what if you were identifying it as classical depression when, in fact, it’s a spiritual crisis?
The dark night is only dark because we fear the power of the Light and love in our lives – and this is the journey of encountering our own barriers. My dear friend and colleague Mirabai Starr will describe this journey in detail, offering insights into why the dark night is an essential part of our spiritual empowerment.
