Overview of An Archetype Intensive

Archetypes are the governing psychic patterns of our unconscious, and sometimes very conscious selves. Another way to think about archetypes is that they are patterns of power that influence every aspect of our behavior, thinking, emotions, cravings, attractions, ambitions, habits – in short, our archetypal patterns influence everything. They are our silent psychic partners that, ironically, everyone else can often see so clearly in us. Why then, are we frequently so blind to our own behavioral patterns? Because archetypal patterns are so subtle, so quick on the draw, so woven into the fabric of who we are that most often their influence manifests faster than we can consciously realize.

We overreact to something someone said, for example, activating an inner sensation of being wounded as a child or victimized. Past emotions take charge of our adult mind and in a microsecond, our inner Wounded Child becomes the dominant voice in our mind. Often our inner Wounded Child will generate memories and emotions that have nothing whatsoever to do with our present moment, and yet once the emotional archive of the Wounded Child is activated, we are in the energy of old wounds trying to navigate a new situation or relationship. Imagine how different our choices would be if we were aware of the particular voice of the Wounded Child in our psyche?  Would we then be able to “take a deep breath” and refocus ourselves with more clarity and indeed, maturity?  Yes, we would.

These experiences – call them archetypal flashbacks – are common to all of us. The rigorous task of becoming conscious means that we grow, little-by-little, in our awareness of our patterns in order to exert conscious control and influence. By far one of the most effective programs for doing just that is Alcoholics Anonymous which gave the world a conscious path for engaging with the power of the Addict archetype. Countless people credit that program with saving their lives and relationships.

As I wrote years ago in my book, Sacred Contracts, each of us has a cluster of 12 intimate archetypal patterns that form the psychic guardrails of our inner being. We are always influenced by other archetypal patterns, as the boundary between patterns is not a concrete one, but a amorphous psychic field. Yet, our primary 12 weave their way into every moment of our lives.

In this intensive, I want to address the subtle and fascinating influence of our archetypal patterns. Specifically, I will begin with a discussion on explaining archetypes in general and how expanding our inner consciousness opens our pathways to recognizing our own patterns.

The goal of this intensive is to help you develop a deep regard for the power and nature of your own psyche and soul and to expand your awareness of your own silent psychic partners. My work in healing has taught me that our archetypal patterns are by far the most influential component of our inner nature. We can follow the healthiest diet and exercise program available to us, and yet, if we remain unconscious about why we do what we do, why we make self-sabotaging decisions, why relationships fail, and why we hold on to childhood fears, we end up living in emotional turmoil.

The archetypes we will explore are those people have asked me about the most in my lectures and classes.

I am always delighted to teach about archetypes and our inner nature. I have to admit that I am squeezing quite a bit into these four sessions, but we can always do more. I hope you’ll join me.

Love,
Caroline

An Archetype Intensive

Lesson Plan

Session One:
Tuesday, May 14
1 pm ET / 10 am PT

We Live in an Archetypal Universe

Everything that exists participates in the laws and energetic patterns that govern our universe. Everything in the physical world has an energetic counterpart. The Shaman archetype, for example, gives a person the inner sensitivity to engage with the energetic domain of nature and its life-giving forces. Those who identify with the Healer archetype are drawn to the invisible domain and to working with the energetic network that surrounds physical life. In this first session, we will investigate the conscious energetic realm of life that we cannot see, yet is populated with silent psychic partners that influence every thought we have.

Session Two:
Thursday, May 16
1 pm ET / 10 am PT

Identifying Your Archetypal Patterns

Where do you begin to recognize a pattern?  Archetypal patterns have countless expressions. We often select an archetype because we like it (the Queen, for example), or because we aspire to what that archetype represents (the Actor). But an attraction to an archetype does not necessarily mean that it is one of your primary power patterns.  I’ve encountered many people who do not identify with the Actor because they have no interest in professional acting.  Because of that association with the Actor as a profession, they are often unable to recognize that much of their life’s upheavals are rooted in “acting out” or in “playing roles” to get by. How do you identify your own patterns? And does recognizing that you have a pattern automatically change your life?

Session Three:
Tuesday, May 21
1 pm ET / 10 am PT

Exploring the Archetypes We Share

I learned years ago that self-esteem is our foundational inner authority. I have taught for years that clear intuition is not a gift; it is the result of believing in your inner self, of having esteem for yourself. Self-esteem, so far as I am concerned, is essential to our health, as it is nearly impossible to hold yourself in high regard – to truly understand what it is to love yourself (much less have the courage to act on that love), without first recognizing the sacredness of your inner self.  No one is born with healthy self-esteem.  Life provides us with pathways, challenges, and guides (parents, teachers, friends), who play various roles in the development of our inner self.  Those roles can be very wounding experiences as well as inspiring. But what all of our life experiences have in common as we each develop our sense of self-esteem is that we share these four archetypal patterns that embody the challenges inherent to awakening authentic inner authority: The Prostitute, the Victim, the Child and the Saboteur.  In this session, we will discuss the ways these four silent psychic partners continually express themselves in our psyche and what we are meant to learn from them.

Session Four:
Thursday, May 23
1 pm ET / 10 am PT

The Tiger by the Tail

Once you become aware of even one of your archetypal patterns, for example, the Wounded or Invisible Child, or your inner Judge, or your Healer, you cannot take your “intuitive eyes” off of it. Like inviting an old friend into your home for the first time so that you can get to know each other better, recognizing an archetypal pattern is like encountering an inner psychic pattern that has always influenced you, only now you will want to know more about that pattern and its silent presence in your inner being. How can you not? When people finally recognize that they have the Addict, it is impossible to silence that psychic partner from that moment onward – literally, that moment. The patterns of the Addict become more and “conscious” – all with the intention of helping to empower the individual.  In this session, we will discuss the Addict, the Healer, the Destroyer (variations include the Curmudgeon, Complainer, Pessimist), the Rescuer, the Bully (why is this archetype so popular these days?) and the Entrepreneur/Visionary.

Finally, we will discuss archetypal experiences that are common to all of us, such as death and rebirth, the Phoenix rising from the ashes, and the experiences of betrayal and abandonment.
